Great Singapore Sales! (GSS) It is the an annual shopping event held in Singapore whereby many major stores and malls will extend their opening hours and offer great promotions to attract tourists. There are many types of luxuries on sale, ranging from exclusive lifestyle promotions, shopping, gourmet dining, wellness experience, and nightlife & entertainment. Even local attractions such as the DHL balloon and the Singapore Zoo offers discounted prices during this period of time.
The GSS is held annually around May to July for a period of 2 months. In 2009, it started on 29 May and ended on 26 July. During this period, Orchard Road will be extremely crowded because price discounts can go as high as 70%. Not only tourists are attracted to the sale, you would even find many locals shopping as it is the best time to get the items you desire at a far lower price.
One of the many events held during the GSS is The Great Singapore Shopping Challenge. This is a yearly GSS event and what happens is that participants are given S$1000 each and a list of the types of items that they have to shop for. The group that makes the most savings on their purchases wins the contest. The participants get to keep whatever they purchase, and the winners receive additional prizes. As many as 30 teams participate each year and these teams come from all over the world. This year’s winners came from London and they each walked away with $10000.Can’t wait to get the best bargains you can find?
